Michelin XML – The soft-soil and mud champion. Best traction in deep mud, sand, and loose terrain. Most aggressive tread of the four. Perfect when you need maximum off-road bite.
Michelin XZL – The all-around workhorse. Balanced for mixed use — strong on mud, sand, snow, and rocks while handling highway miles. Excellent durability and load capacity. The most versatile military truck tire.
Michelin G20 XL – The heavy hauler. Designed for high load-carrying on 5-ton and similar trucks. Good all-position performance with solid self-cleaning and stability under heavy weight. Proven on military trucks.
Goodyear MVT – The highway and mixed-use tire. Quieter on pavement, comfortable ride, and still capable off-road. Best choice if you spend significant time on roads while keeping military-grade toughness.
All four work on the 5-ton. XML for pure off-road performance, XZL for best overall, G20 for heavy loads, MVT for road comfort.
Goodyear MT: The most common tire in military service. All-terrain tread, directional design, larger footprint, and a tougher compound that resists tearing on rocks. It lasts longer in rocky terrain but has less aggressive bite in deep mud.
Goodyear MTR: More aggressive tread with deeper lugs and sidewall grips for better traction in mud, sand, and off-road. Comes in higher load ratings than the standard MT, has stiffer sidewalls, and is non-directional.
BFGoodrich Baja T/A: Nearly identical aggressive tread pattern to the MTR, also with sidewall lugs. Softer rubber compound provides excellent grip but wears and tears faster on rocks compared to the Goodyear MT.
All three are 37x12.50R16.5 size. The MT dominates military fleets for its durability, while the MTR and BFG trade some longevity for better off-road traction.
